The short version

Your journal entries stay on your device. Dusk does not upload your journal text. Dusk does record limited save statistics: a randomly generated device identifier and the time a save event reaches the server.

Your journal and account

Dusk does not require an account, email address, or password. What you write is stored locally on your device. Journal text is not included in requests for daily questions or save statistics. Dusk does not provide automatic cloud sync for entries.

Your device or operating system may have its own backup settings. Those settings and any files you choose to export are separate from Dusk’s servers.

Save statistics

When you save an entry, Dusk attempts to send a save event to its backend. The event contains a randomly generated identifier stored by Dusk on your device. The server stores that identifier and the time it receives the event. It does not receive your answer, journal text, or exported backup.

The identifier lets us group saves from the same installation and count save events and distinct devices. These records are used to understand app usage. The identifier is not your name, email address, or advertising identifier, but it remains associated with your save events; the records are not treated as fully anonymous.

Daily questions and service protection

Dusk can request the daily question from its backend. Version 1.1.1 also includes a question bank on the device so prompts remain available offline.

The backend uses IP addresses and temporary in-memory request counts to limit excessive requests for daily questions. IP addresses are not stored in the save-event table. Backend hosting providers process normal network information needed to operate the service.

Hosting and advertising

Dusk’s backend is hosted on Replit. Its hosting and database services process the limited information described above to operate the app and store save statistics. This does not give the backend access to your journal text.

Dusk does not include advertising SDKs or use these save statistics for targeted advertising, tracking you across other companies’ apps or websites, or sale to data brokers.

Exporting and importing backups

You can export entries from Settings as a Markdown file. The file is created on your device and contains your journal text, dates, question text, and entry timestamps. You choose whether and where to save or share it. Anyone you share the file with can read its contents.

Importing a backup restores missing dates to local storage. If an entry for a date already exists on your device, Dusk keeps the existing entry. Importing and exporting do not provide automatic cloud sync.

Deleting entries and retained statistics

Settings lets you delete locally stored journal entries. That action does not delete files you previously exported, copies you shared, or save events already recorded on the server.

Save-event records are retained for usage statistics; they do not currently have an automatic expiry. Contact us with privacy questions or requests. Because Dusk has no account and does not collect your name or email through the app, an email address alone does not identify a device’s save events.
